Barakat Ersari Project
Afghan Ersari Weavers.
In l988, Chris Walter founded the Cultural Survival Barakat Ersari Project with Afghan Turkmen refugees in North Pakistan. His inspiration to form this non-profit organization came from his passion to help in the protection of endangered peoples and cultures throughout the world. This project is reviving the art of the traditional Ersari Turkmen weaving using only hand-carded, hand-spun and vegetable dyed wool free of chemical washes with traditional old Turkmen designs. The profits from this project are being used to build schools and provide food and health care for the weaving families and surrounding communities.
At present, there are hundreds of students in the three schools supported by this Cultural Survival Project.
We have been highly impressed with the integrity, quality and beauty of these magnificent Ersari rugs. They are certainly some of the best natural dyed, Turkomen - designed tribal rugs being woven today.
